In a project in collaboration with the Trier City Library, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the stock of medieval texts in St. Matthias' library was reconstructed. More than 400 manuscripts – among them the famous Treverian Apocalypse and manuscripts by Hildegard of Bingen – have been digitised by the Centre for Digital Humanities.
In the Middle Ages, the Benedictine abbey St. Matthias (St. Eucharius) in Trier was among the most important Benedictine abbeys on German soil. Its origins reach back into pre-Benedictine times. In the middle of the fifth century a coemetarial church was built on an old Roman cemetery in the south of Trier. The resident community of clerics, who have lived under the rule of St. Benedict since the end of the tenth century, have remained there with few interruptions until the present day. The library and the scriptorium of the monastery offer unique possibilities to reconstruct the spiritual life of a community which had a considerable influence on culture in the middle of Europe.
All digital representations were collected in the database "Manuscripta mediaevalia", and thus are available independently and free of charge on the web. Moreover, the scans are linked with the available manuscript annotations. Such linking of original documents and secondary information allows for extensive scientific examination of the stock of texts.
